As you may have guessed from my previous post, starring in an online show on style hasn’t been my lifelong ambition. Now I’ll admit that I haven’t had a single predominant career goal through most of my life so much as a long series of interests. Maybe that’s why I graduated college with two majors and two minors, and a couple more abandoned majors. However, despite having a long list of interests, “fashion show host” was nowhere to be found on that list — or anything else fashion related for that matter.
Yes, the Meg of even two years ago would be laughing her butt off at the notion and the Meg of a few years prior… well, she’d probably have some choice words that I won’t repeat here. You see, I’ve spent most of my life with a complete disdain for fashion, and for many of the same reasons why a lot of women have a love-hate (or sometimes just hate) relationship with the fashion industry.
Where I grew up in a tiny, very rural north Florida town could hardly be further from the runways of New York. We didn’t have a mall. We didn’t even have a Wal-Mart. In fact, there still aren’t any clothing stores there that I’m aware of. My mom and I weren’t rolling in dough or spare time, either. Add to that mix the fact that, like a lot of girls, I had a hard time finding clothes that fit. In my particular case, even when I was ’skinny’ I was too tall and too… erm…. big busted (not the blessing some would make it out to be, I assure you). More than that, though, I just didn’t know what to wear for my body.
Woe is me? No. My problems weren’t unique — they still aren’t. The problems I’ve faced finding clothes are the same problems that most people face, and women in particular. It is hard to find clothes that fit right and look great without spending a lot of time and/or money — and it’s been really hard to find quality style advice, especially before the rise of good style blogs. It’s no wonder that many people just seem to give up and wear an ill-fitting uniform of baggy t-shirts and “mom” jeans. I spent many years in that uniform and I’m still only in my mid-20s. Fortunately, things did change for me.
Stay tuned for my next post, where I explain how.
